European Christmas markets in 2026

Cold weather and rainy days that seem to last for months aren't everyone's idea of a good time.

But winter does have one very persuasive argument in its favour: Christmas. Think twinkling lights, presents, time with family and mugs of mulled wine, plus enough festive spirit to make all those extra layers worthwhile. Europe's Christmas markets bring that feeling to life. Once the stalls are open and the lights are on, there's no mistaking the season. Picking just one favourite is a tall order, so we've put together ten contenders worth planning a trip around.

Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg's ornate Schöner Brunnen fountain rises above a square scented with gingerbread and

bratwurst, one of the city's most famous culinary exports.

Families gather for a glimpse of the golden-haired Christkind, the angel-like figure at the heart of the market's traditions. Grown-ups can warm their hands around a mug of Glühwein or try a smoky Rauchbier. There's plenty to take home, too, if the gingerbread survives the journey.

Dates: 27 November to 24 December 2026

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is one of those cities that feels a little Christmassy all year round, at least when you're visiting. But once the weather turns and the festive lights come on,

the whole city starts to feel like a winter fairy tale.

The traditional Christmas market fills East Princes Street Gardens, with food, drinks, gifts and fairground thrills against that unmistakable skyline. Mulled wine makes a convincing case for lingering. This year's celebrations spread across East and West Princes Street Gardens and George Street, with more rides, festive food and illuminations to explore. Head to West Princes Street Gardens for the family funfair and its seasonal displays.

Dates: 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027

Budapest, Hungary

Vörösmarty Square is home to one of Budapest's best-known traditional Christmas markets, a short walk from the Danube.

Come for the stalls, stay for the food.

Browse handmade gifts, toys and souvenirs, then make room for goulash, strudel and the sort of warming food that makes the cold feel like part of the plan. Pick up a mulled wine and settle into the evening atmosphere, with music adding to the festive mood. Check the organiser's programme for activities on the day you visit.

Where: Vörösmarty Square, Budapest
Dates: 13 November 2026 to the early hours of 1 January 2027. Craft stalls and the children's railway finish on 28 December; the New Year's Eve celebration runs until 3am.

Paris, France

Paris hardly needs Christmas lights to look good. It is the City of Light, after all. Still, a little festive dressing makes it even harder to resist.

More than a dozen Christmas markets pop up across the city,

but our pick is the one in the Tuileries Garden, along its northern side towards Place de la Concorde. Browse the chalets, duck away for a glass of champagne, then take a turn on the giant Ferris wheel for a view that makes the cold cheeks worthwhile.

Dates: 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027

Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius looks like a postcard at the best of times, so imagine what happens when the Lithuanian capital dresses for Christmas. It's still a less obvious choice for a European winter city break, which means

there's a little more room to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Take your time among the wooden chalets in Cathedral Square, browsing handmade gifts with a mulled wine in hand. This is a Christmas market for wandering, rather than racing through a checklist.

Dates: 28 November to 27 December 2026

Gothenburg, Sweden

Set inside Liseberg amusement park, Gothenburg's Christmas market delivers the kind of full-scale festive magic you'd expect from Disney. For 2026, the big new attraction is Luma Celestia, a kilometre-long illuminated walk through a world of stars and stories. Wander the market in search of glögg, Sweden's mulled wine, and handmade presents, and

leave time for Liseberg's rides and attractions.

Don't miss the enormous illuminated Christmas tree, either. Its clean, towering outline is a very Scandinavian way of making a big impression.

Dates: Selected days from 14 November to 30 December 2026. Check the park's calendar before booking; it is closed on 24 and 25 December.

Zagreb, Croatia

Over the past few years, the Croatian capital has quietly become one of Europe's most exciting Christmas destinations, largely thanks to Advent Zagreb. The whole city gets involved, with markets, music, entertainment and dazzling decorations taking over its squares and parks.

The illuminated trees in Zrinjevac are a particular highlight,

while busy Ban Jelačić Square makes a natural centre for the festivities. Food is a major part of the experience, and mulled wine gets plenty of attention, too. You might want to go easy on the latter before lacing up your skates at one of the city's ice rinks.

Dates: 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027

Vienna, Austria

Bigger isn't always better, but Christmas gets to bend the rules. Vienna goes all out, especially at the market on Rathausplatz, beneath the glowing façade of the Austrian capital's magnificent City Hall.

Around a hundred stalls make a strong case for bringing an extra bag,

with beautifully made gifts and seasonal treats, plus plenty of festivities to join in with. This is Vienna doing Christmas on a grand scale.

Dates: 13 November to 26 December 2026

Strasbourg, France

Where better to spend the festive season than the self-styled Capital of Christmas? Strasbourg may be one of Europe's political centres, but it has an equally serious claim to Christmas-market greatness,

dating back to 1570, when its famous Christkindelsmärik was first held.

The half-timbered houses and cobbled streets look even better dressed in lights, while the stalls are piled with handmade decorations and Alsatian favourites. Try bredele, the region's little Christmas biscuits, and flammekueche, a crisp, thin flatbread topped with cream, onions and bacon. Yes, it tastes as good as it sounds. The huge Christmas tree in Place Kléber is the finishing touch.

Where: Strasbourg, Alsace, France
Dates: 27 November to 24 December 2026

Aachen, Germany

Wooden chalets fill Münsterplatz and the streets around Aachen's cathedral and Town Hall. The cathedral, with its Carolingian core, is the resting place of Charlemagne, who died in 814. The market is particularly good for

distinctive spiced biscuits with a hint of anise,

known as Printen. You'll also find mulled-wine-flavoured sweets and crisp Kartoffelpuffer, potato pancakes that give latkes some serious competition.
