Ice cream as a way of life: three places to try

Have you started ice-cream season yet?

If you love good ice cream, there isn’t really a season. Gelato works all year round. Still, summer heat does make us want to head outside

with a crisp cone of something cold in hand.

Among the many choices, these three places stand out for flavour, good ingredients and the welcome relief of a scoop on a hot day.

Gelateria Confetti

Ice cream as a way of life: three places to try

The Italian address known for pasta, pizza and dolce-vita desserts reminds us every summer that ice cream can be a way of life. It understands that

good gelato is more than dessert:

it’s a hot-day rescue plan with a velvety texture and a little crunch. There are dozens of flavours, from classics to fresh fruit combinations, making it one of those places where one scoop tends to become two. Happily, it crosses our path at several addresses. The summer garden on Hristo Belchev Street is a particularly good weekly habit.

Smottie

Smottie began with its owners’ wish for soft-serve ice cream they could share with their children without raising an eyebrow at the ingredients list. Unable to find it, they made it themselves. Their craft soft serve takes a different approach from industrial versions.

Soft, velvety and served a little warmer to let the flavour open up.

Working with Goloso’s founder, Smottie develops seasonal flavours. The mango and raspberry sorbet, made with real fruit and raw cane sugar, is one to try. Add an Inka freddo and there’s a taste of childhood, too.

Always refining its products, 100 Grama Sladki makes gelato using Italian techniques and a close eye on flavour. Ingredients include eggs, rich full-fat milk, fine Belgian chocolate and fresh seasonal fruit for the sorbets,

turning each recipe into a little trip to Italy.

The flavours combine tradition with a creative touch, like a long summer afternoon in Rome’s narrow streets. For special occasions, its boutique gelato cart is available to hire, bringing a little dolce vita to your event.
