Brunch in Sofia: places worth getting up for

Some mornings, setting an alarm feels criminal.

The only sensible thing is to turn over, let yourself wake up in your own time and then head, slowly and without guilt, towards a table somewhere in the city.

Brunch is that small ritual: neither breakfast nor lunch, but something better than both.

Good coffee meets eggs Benedict, the conversation has no finishing time and the only question is whether to order dessert as well. Sofia knows how to do this. We’ve picked out the places worth leaving bed for.

Balkan Falsch

Brunch in Sofia: places worth getting up for

Our weekend appetite has an alibi: brunch at Balkan Falsch, with Balkan cooking that gives traditional flavours a contemporary turn,

alongside speciality coffee, sourdough baking and house drinks.

The weekend dishes put local produce first, revisiting familiar recipes with a city sensibility. Think slices of toast finished with a raspberry, eggs nestled with cheese and a piece of freshly baked bread. Excuse us, writing this while hungry was a mistake. Confirm the current brunch hours before visiting.

43.12 Coffee & Brunch

Brunch in Sofia: places worth getting up for

In Sofia’s urban bustle, 43.12 has a pace of its own that suits us rather well. The name refers to the coordinates of its original Varna address, and to the idea of a place with its own character.
The Sofia location continues the focus on speciality coffee, with a particularly tempting brunch (in Bulgarian) alongside it. In the generous garden,

choose from eggs in various forms, a smash burger, avocado toast,

prawn toast, fluffy pancakes, seasonal soups and sweet treats that work as well for a late breakfast as a light lunch. Coffee remains central, with beans from the team’s own Snack Coffee Roasters. There’s care behind the cup, and plenty of reason to stay: a catch-up, some gloriously unhurried time and, inevitably, another coffee.

Café 1920

From Lions’ Bridge to Shishman Street, Café 1920 has made itself at home on Sofia’s brunch scene. Its menu combines established favourites with more contemporary city tastes,

from American pancakes and avocado toast to mekitsa with homemade dips,

alongside sandwiches and even breakfast nachos, with speciality coffee and cocktails to drink. The room and the menu share a confidence that comes from knowing what works, and where to go next.

Claire Bakery

Brunch in Sofia: places worth getting up for

The day starts with dough here. Different loaves are made with quality flour, sourdough and a slow fermentation, and their smell reaches the street first. Baguette sandwiches with Italian cheeses and salami follow. The cookies have a following of their own, made with a straightforward ingredient list and flavours people return for.

At Easter, kozunak, Bulgaria’s sweet festive bread, joins the baking.

There’s more in the cabinet: banitsa, croissants, savoury pastries, cakes, homemade sweets, Belgian-chocolate bonbons and éclairs filled with vanilla cream. Everything is made on site, with time, patience and the smell of butter. Dogs are welcome, too.

Galleta Bakery & Cafe

Walk in and you can almost feel the dough rising on the other side of the wall. The smell of butter takes you somewhere familiar, or perhaps to a little piazza where the sun falls across the tables and crumbs are part of the scenery.

Everything is made by hand, with an honest approach to the craft.

Galleta is the sort of small Sofia find travellers pass on quietly, as though sharing a favourite local secret. The cabinet is full of freshly baked temptations and the coffee makes good company for each one. Arrive early for banitsa, the Bulgarian breakfast favourite that tends to sell out.

Let the sky fall? We’re high enough up here. Ozone’s “O’Heavens, O’Brunch” takes breakfast to the 29th floor of Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia, with the city spread around you and Vitosha joining the conversation. Avocado toast and eggs share the menu with creative versions of banitsa and mekitsi. The selection changes with the ingredients, giving you a reason to look again next time.

Vienna Café & Restaurant

Brunch in Sofia: places worth getting up for

You sit beside a tall window, porcelain clinks softly and coffee arrives on a silver tray. Outside is Sofia; inside, a little of Vienna. Light falls through the glass roof, Art Deco lines frame the room and two terraces bring the park close to your table. Vienna Café & Restaurant gives brunch the character of a city ritual (in Bulgarian). Check the current serving hours when booking. The pastry cabinet makes a persuasive opening verse:

Sachertorte, Black Forest gateau and apple strudel, each with its own layers to explore.

Coffee follows the Viennese tradition, sometimes with a little alcohol in the mix. On the third floor of Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia, the morning takes on the lightness of a waltz. You can almost imagine a modern-day Empress Sisi leaving her gloves on the table, as conversation unfolds like a Zweig novella. Confirm the current brunch service when booking.
