Theodore Ushev’s place in the Lucas Museum story

If you follow the world of Star Wars, you may already have heard about the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

There is a Bulgarian connection to its story too.

Theodore Ushev’s Tower Bawher is part of the museum’s inaugural film programme. The National Film Board of Canada confirmed its inclusion among nineteen NFB titles, alongside work by Norman McLaren, Arthur Lipsett and Jean-Claude Labrecque. For a Bulgarian filmmaker whose work has travelled so widely, it is another remarkable setting in which audiences can encounter it.

Tower Bawher was an early professional animation by Ushev,

made for the National Film Board of Canada in 2005. The Lucas Museum opened on 22 September 2026. Its film programme brings experimental and narrative traditions into conversation, giving moving images a place alongside the other visual stories collected there. The museum’s current programme and ticket arrangements are the place to check before planning a visit.

The original article also announced a Sofia screening to mark the film’s inclusion in the museum programme.

That September programme paired Tower Bawher with Ushev’s Life with an Idiot,

at Odeon Cinema, with the filmmaker due to attend a discussion. It is a past event, not a forthcoming screening recommendation.
